I could hide them completely, but then its easy to lose track of proportions and move things where they shouldn't be. Is there any way to make an object or part of a mesh transparent while editing it?

You have to use a camera for this to work, the camera can be set up so the boundaries are at the edges of the screen, activating "lock camera to view" (function is in my favorites menu) makes it then possible to look around and rotate the view while staying in the camera. If they are different objects it will be harder to make them look like they are one.
